Curator Diary - James Tissot: Ambiguously Modern 13 May 2020 Just as one of our paintings was about to be the star work in a major exhibition on James Tissot at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, museums and galleries across France were forced to close. James Tissot (1836-1902) était un peintre virtuose dont l'élégance dépassa vite les frontières de la France. In his portrait of James Tissot, close friend and fellow modernist Edgar Degas placed his own copy of the Louvre’s Portrait of Frederick the Wise, 1530-35 (once considered an original Cranach and now demoted to “Cranach Workshop”) right in the middle of the composition in order to underscore its significance in Tissot’s oeuvre. Though invited by Edgar Degas to exhibit with the Impressionist circle, Tissot instead garnered exceptional critical and commercial success on his own in London and Paris, securing his international reputation.
